Class Descriptions
Blues Music & History
What is Blues? What’s a Blues Idiom, and how do we group them? What makes Blues dance, *Blues* dance? We’ll go over some of the history and the cultural and social contexts of Blues music and dance.
Juke Joints and Ballrooms
Building on the first class, we’ll look at the similarities and differences among Jukin’ and Ballroomin’ dances, and how these different dances/movements are part of the Jazz continuum.
Southern Stuff: Applied Aesthetics 1
In this class we will learn a number of basic steps to idiom dances, how they use the same fundamentals, but executed in a way that results in different dances even when danced to the same music.
Southern Stuff: Applied Aesthetics 2
In this class we will explore a number of idiom dances, learning how they build off the same fundamentals, but based on how they interact with the music results in different dances.
Juke Joint Sampler
This class will teach numerous common Blues moves and movements which are in truth the basic steps for entire Blues idiom dances. You’ll get a chance to learn some new dances and have your mind expanded on familiar territory.
Close Embrace But Make it Gooder
Ok, sure… you can do close embrace. But is your close embrace art yet? Could it be…. Better? What’s holding you back? Come geek out and make your close embrace something to behold - pun fully intended.
The Great Migration: Blues Dance in the Ballroom
In this class we'll explore the various Blues dances that were created in Ballrooms from the Delta, Northeast, and Midwest, learning what makes them similar and different and how to put them in our bodies.
Badass Ballroom
The Ballroom Blues dances are some of the most popular in our contemporary scenes but few dancers understand how to embrace the essential Black aesthetic of these Blues dances which prevents them from simply being interpretations of European Ballroom movement and moves. This class will focus on making your Ballroom Blues as Badass as the funkiest Juke Joint dances by focusing on broken lines, ephebism, hotness, coolness, and using multiple rhythms, centers, and pulse.
The Stride
The Stride is a Blues Idiom dance with a super unique close-embrace connection that makes it unlike other close embrace Blues dances. This is a really hard dance! No prior experience with The Stride required, but you must be comfortable with dancing close embrace.
Stretch and Momentum in Ballroomin’ Blues
Most Blues Idiom dances use stretch/compression and momentum as tools for leading and following, so it’s no wonder that we love to spend time geeking out about it. More importantly, it’s a set of skills that we think the Blues scene at large could stand to improve (Yes, this means you!).
Blues Challenge: What We’re Seeing at This Event
This class is pretty much what the title implies: we’ve been teaching you, watching you, and dancing with you all weekend long, and we want to tailor a class to what y’all at Lake Effect Blues need.
Follow the Follower
African-American dances are characterized by many things, but two of the most important are improvisation and cooperation. These come to play in Blues through riffin', the ability to improvise not just on the music but on the steps and movement of your partner, and through inclusion, the ability to adapt your ideas and your movement so they include the ideas and movement of your partner. When executed at the highest level, ideas and moves are shared, suggested, and embraced so seamlessly that where an idea came from is not only not important, but impossible to discern.
Blues: A Living Tradition - Culture Talk
In this discussion we will talk about what shaped the Blues, historically, culturally, musically, and geographically; where our contemporary scene came from; where we hope to see it go; and all of our roles in that future.
The Schedule
This year we are focusing on the styles of movement in Blues. Throughout the weekend each of our rooms will be dedicated to exploring either Ballroomin' , Jukin' , or African movement through blues music, dancing, history and culture. Each class will be 1 hour and 20 minutes.

Jukin' (J)
These classes will be focusing in Jukin' Blues, a style of movement and dance that was developed to be danced in the tiny Juke Joints of the past to the more rhythmic Delta and electric blues music.

Ballroomin' (B)
These classes will be focusing in Ballroomin' Blues, a style of movement and dance that was developed to be danced in the large ballrooms of the past with more lyrical big band jazz.

African Movement (A)
These classes will be diving into the history and culture of classical African movements styles and dance with our friends from Blak Jakk Dance! We believe it is important to know your roots and understand why and how we have the art form of today. Join us in strengthening your understanding and movement aesthetic with African movement.

Austin Walkin' Cane
Austin Walkin’ Cane is an original & classic delta blues artist featuring slide guitar and soulful vocals. Austin Walkin' Cane is a blues singer, songwriter and slide guitarist that performs acoustic solo, duo & electric band sets. He’ll be bringing in a band for the evening and playing solo for the late night at Lake Effect Blues! He has toured Australia, Nepal, Colombia, France, Germany, England, Wales, and the US, from New Orleans, Louisiana to Juneau, Alaska with only a guitar & suitcase in hand. Austin walked for ten years with a cane due to an arterial venous malformation at birth. While performing on Bourbon Street in New Orleans, a homeless man called out "Hey Walkin' Cane got some spare change for a brother?!" Austin took the jibe as his nickname. In 1996, after years of battling the inevitable, his left leg was amputated below the knee. A year after the surgery, he returned to the music scene stronger & without need of a cane.

Paul Consentino's Boilermaker Jazz Band
Paul Cosentino’s Boilermaker Jazz Band brings the sounds of the jazz age and swing era back to life. Interpreting Jazz Classics and The Great American Songbook in their own unique fashion, you’ll hear familiar tunes and rarities performed by superb instrumentalists and heartfelt vocalists. From concert halls, festival stages and dances, to elegant soirees, weddings and corporate events, listeners and dancers agree — with their infectious beat and enthusiasm this band can make any crowd move!
Leading the Boilermaker Jazz Band on clarinet, saxophone, and vocals is Paul Cosentino, a full-time bandleader/performer who founded the band in 1988 at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh. He is constantly searching for more tunes to add to the band’s classic jazz repertoire — you’ll hear something different every time!
